Four of the City College of Cagayan de Oro (CCCDO) officials actively participated in the Development Writeshop 2 on the Reframing of the Pre-Service Teacher Education Curriculum – Specialization Component. This writeshop was organized by the Research Institute for Teacher Quality (RITQ) in collaboration with the Teacher Education Council (TEC) and the Commission on Higher Education – Technical Panels for Teacher Education (CHED-TPTE).

In the first batch of the writeshop, conducted on August 18-20, 2025, at Ramada by Wyndham Hotel, Manila, Prof. Charlie Sumili, Director, Office for Languages, Literature and Indigenous Studies, represented CCCDO in the development of the Filipino Specialization component. He offered his expertise in aligning language pedagogical approaches that integrate cross-cultural and multilingual perspectives, while also examining how pre-service teachers may be equipped with the competence and preparedness necessary to thrive in diverse cultural contexts. The second batch, held on August 27–29, 2025, at Harolds Hotel, Quezon City, saw the active involvement of three other CCCDO officials. Dr. Ray Butch D. Mahinay, Vice President for Extension and Social Development Services, contributed to the design of the Certificate in Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program, highlighting the need to prepare pre-service teachers for roles in non-formal and inclusive education settings. Dr. Helmae Tapanan, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Services, provided expertise for the Certificate in Teaching, ensuring academic rigor and alignment with institutional standards, while Dr. Liza Chua, Dean of the College of Education, also focused on the Certificate in Teaching, bringing in perspectives from faculty leadership and program implementation.

“Our engagement in this writeshop underscores City College’s commitment to national collaboration. Together with other institutions, we are helping shape curricula that can respond to local realities while remaining globally competitive,” said Dr. Tapanan.

Through their collective participation, CCCDO officials reinforced the College’s commitment to advancing teacher education reform. This initiative also integrates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by ensuring that future teachers are trained to meet the diverse needs of Filipino learners. It is a bold step forward for the teaching profession in the country—strengthening specializations, elevating certificate programs, and ultimately helping to produce quality Filipino teachers who can contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
