More than forty (40) student leaders from various programs of the City College of Cagayan de Oro (CCCdeO) gathered for the “Lead with Mind & Heart: A Student Leaders’ Mental Awareness Workshop” held on October 17, 2025, at the Audio-Visual Room, Agusan Campus. Organized by the Student Welfare and Services Office (SWSO), the event formed part of the national celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month and aimed to equip student leaders with knowledge and practical skills in promoting mental wellness among their peers.

The workshop opened with an inspiring message from Dr. Helmae E. Tapanan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who reminded participants that even their presence and empathy could already make a difference in someone’s life. She emphasized that true leadership comes from leading with both the mind and the heart, helping others heal, grow, and find strength.

Three learning sessions followed. Mr. Geno P. Matondo, LSW, RGC, CHRA, Associate Professor, began with a discussion on Imposter Syndrome, a common struggle among student leaders. He explained its causes and effects and shared mindset strategies for overcoming self-doubt. One helpful practice he suggested was listing personal achievements to reinforce confidence through evidence-based reflection.

Before moving on to the next session, participants took a moment to pause and reflect as Mr. Timur Vagizov shared a short but meaningful spiritual message

Ms. Maria Michaela Q. Jamora, RPsy, Coordinator of the International Affairs and External Linkages Office, led a session on Mental Health First Aid. She gave light on the role of student leaders as “first responders” who can identify early signs of distress, actively listen, and refer peers to proper support systems. During her talk, participants engaged in role-playing exercises that showcased practical ways to handle situations involving stress, anxiety, and depression.

The final session, facilitated by Ms. Faith Quinal-Colarte, RGC, Director of SWSO, centered on Inclusive and Mental Health-Aware Leadership. She introduced the Four Pillars of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Schools—Promotion, Prevention, Early Intervention, and Referral and Access to Services. Ms. Colarte encouraged student leaders to initiate awareness campaigns and organize wellness fairs featuring peer-created content such as videos, posters, and podcasts that normalize self-care and help-seeking behaviors.

Overall, the workshop underscored the vital role of student leaders as advocates for mental health on campus—individuals who listen, respond, and inspire others to lead with compassion, resilience, and understanding.
