CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines β Researchers from the City College of Cagayan de Oro (CCCDO) clinched major awards at the UNIFFIED International Multidisciplinary Research Conference (UIMRC) held on August 14, 2026, at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City. Organized by the United Federation of Fil-Am Educators, Inc. (UNIFFIED), the conference brought together educators, researchers, and scholars from various disciplines. It provided a platform for sharing innovative and socially relevant research.
In Parallel Session 2 β STEM A, Prof. Jonathan A. Madronero earned top awards for presenting the study βQuantifying Earthquake Risk for Disaster Resilience Using Poisson-Based Exceedance Probability Modeling in the Philippines.β The research garnered 1st Place for Best Research Paper, 1st Place for Best Research Presenter, and 2nd Place for Best Research Abstract. Employing Poisson-based exceedance probability modeling, the study provides a quantitative approach to assessing earthquake risk in the Philippine context. It demonstrates how statistical evidence can support disaster preparedness, risk-informed planning, and resilience-building. The distinctions recognized both the scholarly merit of the research and Madroneroβs effective presentation of a technically rigorous study addressing the countryβs continuing vulnerability to seismic hazards.
In Parallel Session 2 β STEM B, another CCCDO research team earned major distinctions for the study βCourseware Evaluation of a Localized Climate Resilience Learning System: Contributions to Functional Literacy in Communities of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.β Presented by Dr. Ma. Aira Chenessa Aguilar and Prof. Eldin Camposo on behalf of the team, the study received 1st Place for Best Research Abstract, 2nd Place for Best Research Paper, and 2nd Place for Best Research Presenter. The research was authored by Jestoni P. Babia, Joel D. Potane, Amor de Torres, Ma. Aira Chenessa Aguilar, Eldin Camposo, Eugene Ranoco, Fhel Jhon Feliciano, Janice Calapiz, Hope CariΓ±o, Sittie Aliah Paki, and Ray Mar L. Donggian. The study evaluates a localized climate resilience learning system and highlights the potential of context-responsive courseware to strengthen functional literacy while making climate resilience education more relevant and meaningful to communities in Cagayan de Oro City.
CCCDOβs research presence also extended to Parallel Session 1 β Humanities and Social Sciences through an inter-institutional collaborative research paper co-authored by Dr. Joel D. Potane and presented by Dr. Fernan Lopez of PHINMAβCagayan de Oro College on behalf of the research team. The study earned 1st Place for Best Research Paper, 1st Place for Best Research Presenter, and 2nd Place for Best Research Abstract. The recognition highlighted the value of research collaboration across higher education institutions in strengthening multidisciplinary scholarship and knowledge exchange, while Lopezβs top presenter award underscored the effective scholarly communication of the teamβs research.
The award-winning research outputs also reflect the Collegeβs commitment to advancing scholarship aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The earthquake risk research contributes particularly to SDG 11 β Sustainable Cities and Communities through evidence supporting disaster risk reduction and resilient communities. The localized climate resilience courseware advances SDG 4 β Quality Education, SDG 11 β Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13 β Climate Action by connecting functional literacy, education, and community resilience. The inter-institutional research collaboration further reflects SDG 17 β Partnerships for the Goals, emphasizing the importance of academic partnerships, shared expertise, and collaborative knowledge production in addressing complex societal challenges.
