The City College of Cagayan de Oro, through the Office of the Center for Human Rights Education (CHRE), in partnership with the Commission on Human Rights Region 10, conducted a two-day capacity-building workshop for teaching and non-teaching personnel on human rights education last February 13-14, 2025 at Dynasty Court Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
Dr. Ray Butch Mahinay, Vice President for Extension and Social Development Services (ESDS) and Dr. Jean T. Loquillano, Director for the Center of Human Rights Education highlighted the training’s direction to equip teaching and non-teaching personnel with the knowledge and skills to effectively integrate human rights education within the academic framework; develop mechanism in responding cases, and brainstorm innovative activities in advancing human rights education to provide services among internal stakeholders and the broader community.
CHR10 Attorney Hevah Salic, speaking to the 30 participants, highlighted City College of CDO as the sole higher education institution in Cagayan de Oro designated by the CHR as the Center for Human Rights Education.
The workshop covered topics such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Gender and Development, Gender-Based Sexual Harassment, and the use of the COLEGA manual for teaching individual rights.
The center’s goals are consistent with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including gender equality, peace, justice, and partnerships for education. It also supports Cagayan de Oro's RISE agenda, particularly its focus on safety and security. Ultimately, the partnership seeks to position the city as a leader in human rights education and a model child-friendly community.
