Butuan City— The City College of Cagayan de Oro, through its Urban Nexus for Licensing Intellectual Property, Innovation, and Creative Enterprise, launched its Innovation, Protection, and Intellectual Transfer (IPIT) benchmarking series at Caraga State University last April 14-15, 2025. This two-day knowledge-exchange and capacity-building initiative aimed to strengthen CDO's institutional capabilities in intellectual property (IP) protection, technology transfer, and innovation-led research.

Led by Prof. Jonathan A. Madronero, Vice President for UNLI RICE; and fifteen CDO faculty and staff participated in the event, supported by CSU’s Office of the Vice President for Research Development, Innovation, and Extension. The activity fostered collaboration and laid the groundwork for long-term academic and innovation partnerships.

Day 1 featured strategic dialogues with CSU leadership, including President Dr. Rolyn C. Daguil and VP for Research and Innovation Dr. Jeffrey T. Dellosa. CSU shared its innovation roadmap and best practices through presentations from Mr. Kenneth L. Ciudad, Mr. Genesis Jared Cutamora, Ms. Jenelyn R. Asis, and Mr. Joey Arles O. Vergara. Participants also toured CSU’s research facilities, including the black soldier fly facility and Food Technology Center— gaining insights into real-world applications of science-based innovations.

Day 2 focused on legal mechanisms for IP protection. CSU experts presented on various IP registration processes— including patents, trademarks, utility models, industrial designs, and copyrights. A practical open forum followed, addressing questions on documentation and compliance. Closing the event, CSU’s PICO Director Ms. Aquessa Piamonte commended CCCDO’s proactive approach and affirmed future collaboration.

The IPIT benchmarking series marks a pivotal step for CCCDO in developing its own Technology Transfer and Licensing Office, drafting IP policies, and cultivating a campus culture of innovation. Key next steps include appointing an IP coordinator, conducting faculty training, and piloting commercialization initiatives.

This initiative not only deepened institutional learning but also opened doors for co-developed research and enterprise projects — signaling a promising partnership between CSU and CCCDO in driving innovation and inclusive development.
