The City College of Cagayan de Oro, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), hosted the Research and Development Agenda Workshop at the Audio Visual Room (AVR) last October 30-31, 2024.

The activity, which was participated in by the City College teaching and non-teaching personnel, partners from various industries, national government agencies, and the local government unit, aimed at enhancing the research capabilities and innovation of the institution and contributing to the broader development of Region X.

Dr. Jestoni P. Babia, City College President, in his opening message, emphasized the importance of innovation towards achieving the institution’s mission and vision, thereby preparing students for a better future, driving societal progress, and maintaining relevance in an ever-changing world.

Moreover, Engr. Romela N. Ratilla, Regional Director, DOST 10, who provided the rationale of the activity, stressed the role of the DOST in directing and coordinating the country’s scientific and technological efforts geared towards maximum economic and social benefits for the people.

“Our goal, aligned with the Northern Mindanao Regional Development Plan and National Innovation Agenda Strategy Document, is to create an R&D agenda that meets the pressing needs of our industries, communities, and government sectors. Thus, there is a need to produce research with real, positive impacts on the lives of people in Northern Mindanao,” Ratilla stated.

She further added that the workshop brought together key players in the R&D ecosystem, which included the SUPPLY, represented by the City College researchers, who will provide the knowledge and technical expertise. Next is the DEMAND, composed of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and private sector partners, whose needs will guide the research priorities. Lastly, the ENABLERS, made up of national and local government partners, who will help create an environment conducive to innovation and development.

“By bringing these groups together, we are creating a collaborative environment essential for driving research that is capability-based, aligned, and demand-driven,” Ratilla concluded.

Meanwhile, Professor Jonathan Madronero, Vice President for Research, Innovation and Creative Enterprise, along with Dr. Joel D. Potane, Director for Research, who laid the groundwork for this impactful initiative, underscored the essence of collaboration that ignites hope to make a lasting difference.

“This interagency event united passionate minds to build a resilient and innovative future for our community and beyond. Through engaging discussions and strategic planning, you will envision groundbreaking solutions that will shape our path forward,” Director Potane emphasized.
