October 27, 2024

The City College of Cagayan de Oro (CCCDO) has launched a comprehensive mental health and suicide prevention program titled "Re-echoing LIFE - Living In a Facilitative Environment." This community-based initiative, spearheaded by Guidance Counselor Ms. Faith Colarte, RGC, aims to create a more supportive and responsive environment for both students and staff.

This program directly contributes to the RISE Cagayan de Oro City development agenda, particularly under the "Safety, Security, and Social Development" pillar. By equipping both personnel and students with essential mental health skills, the initiative fosters an inclusive environment that promotes personal growth and well-being. It also aligns with the "Education and Skills Development" target, highlighting the importance of comprehensive training programs that address the community's needs.

The "Re-echoing LIFE" initiative is a collaborative effort between the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD)-Psychosocial Unit and the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP). This program builds upon the success of the Training of Trainers conducted in September 2024, which focused on the LIFE approach. This approach emphasizes creating a facilitative environment for mental well-being.

The initiative will involve a series of training sessions for all CCCDO personnel and students across various departments and programs, including BACOMM, BTVTED, BTLED, and TSTI. The training will employ interactive methods such as plenary discussions, group discussions, and role-playing exercises to enhance engagement and skill development.

The objectives of "Re-echoing LIFE" include:

  • Effectively disseminating the training module to all personnel and students.
  • Enhancing the capacity of the psychosocial group by implementing the LIFE approach.
  • Providing participants with a deeper understanding of mental health issues, suicide prevention strategies, and the LIFE approach.
  • Improving participants' skills in active listening, crisis intervention, and fostering a supportive environment.
  • Reducing stigma associated with mental health and increasing confidence in addressing mental health concerns.

"We believe that promoting mental well-being is crucial for our students and staff to thrive," said Ms. Colarte. "This program is a testament to our commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable seeking help and support when needed."

The "Re-echoing LIFE" initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the CCCDO community, fostering a positive and supportive environment for everyone. It is a valuable step towards addressing the growing need for mental health support in educational settings.
