In a recent act of generosity, Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, who currently serves as the Senate Minority Leader and a proud local of Cagayan de Oro, has allocated Php 3,411,275 million worth of TESDA scholarships to the City College of Cagayan de Oro through its Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP).

Last September 22, 2023, a delegation from Senator Koko Pimentel III's office paid a visit to their scholars in the City College of CDOโ€™s Agusan Campus. During this visit, the representatives had a comprehensive discourse with the institutionโ€™s administration and department heads, with the aim of overseeing and providing ongoing assistance to the partnership.

The support from the good senator has empowered the institution in providing skills training to one hundred forty (140) scholar trainees across four (4) qualifications:

  • โ€ข Housekeeping NCII
  • โ€ข Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NCI
  • โ€ข Carpentry NCII
  • โ€ข Plumbing NCI

Senator Koko's commitment to advancing technical vocational education, particularly for those hailing from disadvantaged and vulnerable sectors, has been realized through his scholarship assistance to the institution and ultimately creates opportunities for Kagay-anon youth to acquire the necessary skills to enhance their employability and for an improved quality of life.

It all began during her college years when her godparent, a skilled chef, introduced her to the idea of a career in a cruise ship. Eager to follow her aspirations, she enrolled in Housekeeping NCII qualification at the City College of Cagayan de Oro last October 2023.

However, what she initially thought would be a walk in the park turned out to be a challenging journey. Jcmay was endorsed to Supervised Industry Learning (SIL) in one of the institution's industry partners, Seda Centrio, Cagayan de Oro in C.M. Recto Ave. corner Corrales Street, Cagayan de Oro.

From this SIL program, Jcmay gained an invaluable takeaway - resiliency. She developed the ability to perform effectively in the midst of pressure and physical demands. It was this resiliency that paved the way for Jcmay to become a 4-Star Hotel Employee in Seda Hotel Centrio, a renowned hotel chain in the Philippines.

The City College of Cagayan de Oro is very grateful and would like to thank its industry partners who have continuously shown their support to our trainees and to the institution. We look forward to deploying more OJTs and to producing more โ€œfuture-ready skilled workers".

Jcmay's story is a testament to the challenges faced on the path to success. What obstacles have you encountered on your own journey to success?

In 2023, the Technical Skills and Training Institute (TSTI) launched a meaningful free transportation program aimed at supporting low-income students, effectively reducing their financial burdens and improving access to educational opportunities. This initiative, made possible through a partnership with the City Mayorโ€™s Office, ensures students have a dependable way to commute from designated pick-up points to campus, making their attendance at classes more achievable without the stress of transportation costs.

Operational Timeline: From July to September, the program transported students from Corrales Ave. and Tirso Neri St. pick-up points to TSTIโ€™s campus, with an impressive turnout:

  • July: 8 days of service, transporting between 13 to 36 students daily.
  • August: 9 days of service, transporting between 16 to 37 students daily.
  • September: 5 days of service, transporting between 10 to 50 students daily.

Funding and Expenditures: The total cost of the program reached Php 17,220, with monthly expenses broken down as follows:

  • July: Php 5,970
  • August: Php 6,450
  • September: Php 4,800
By alleviating transportation expenses, TSTI strives to boost attendance and support better academic outcomes for its students.

This initiative is a testament to TSTIโ€™s commitment to providing essential support services, enabling all students, regardless of financial background, to succeed. TSTIโ€™s ongoing efforts to maintain and expand this program demonstrate its dedication to inclusivity and equal opportunity in education.

Recently, 30 members from the Nahilaran Indigenous Peoples of Dansolihon, out-of-school youth (OSYs), and Muslim communities successfully completed a three-day training on Microsoft Productivity Tools (Visayan Version) facilitated by the City College of Cagayan de Oro.

This training was led by the Department of Information and Communications Technology Region 10 in collaboration with Coursebank and several teachers from the Department of Education - Division of Cagayan de Oro.

This training serves as a precursor to the Localized Accessible Knowledge and Inclusive Platform (LAโ€™KIP) modules set to launch on February 13 of this year, featuring an additional 13 new modules.

These modules will provide students with the opportunity to learn the course using the Bisaya language.

Included in the training were Microsoft workspace applications, particularly MS WORD and MS EXCEL.

"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." - Joseph Campbell

This powerful quote, shared by our third resource speaker, Ms. Xyla Mercedita E. Gualberto, resonated with the campers on Day 2 of the GIYA 2023 Leadership Training Camp. In her inspiring talk on Social Responsibility, Ms. Gualberto emphasized the importance of courage and self-awareness in the pursuit of community service and positive impact. She encouraged each participant to face their personal fears and uncertainties, suggesting that personal growth and the rewards of service often lie just beyond these challenges.

The second day of the camp was designed to deepen the campersโ€™ understanding of social responsibility and foster a strong sense of duty toward their communities. Through interactive discussions, Ms. Gualberto introduced the concept of being a responsible member of society, underlining the importance of active engagement in community initiatives and the value of teamwork.

The activities of the day were crafted not only to foster camaraderie and spark friendly competition but also to help participants build networks and form meaningful connections with one another. Engaging in team-building exercises and group projects, the campers learned valuable lessons in collaboration, communication, and problem-solvingโ€”all essential qualities for effective leadership.

As the day progressed, the campers embraced a supportive and encouraging environment, motivated by their peers and mentors to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges. By the end of the day, the campers left with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to making a positive difference in their communities.

In pursuit of advancing and broadening educational opportunities in the city, the inaugural โ€˜HINABI Stakeholders' Summitโ€™ was successfully concluded on Tuesday, November 28, hosted by the City College of Cagayan de Oro.

Over 200 participants from various sectorsโ€”including private and public organizations, non-government organizations, industries, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), youth representatives, and technical vocational institutionsโ€”attended the event and expressed their support for the growth of Cagayan de Oro City College as it embarks on its journey.

HINABI was organized by the local government under Mayor Rolando โ€œKlarexโ€ Uyโ€™s administration, aligned with the RISE agenda, which prioritizes education. The summit was also supported by the Oro Youth Development Office, USAID Opportunity 2.0, the Out-of-School Youth Development Alliance, and the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd).

The main goal of HINABI was to deepen understanding of the Philippine Higher Education and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system, and workforce development, to address job-skills mismatch and the skills in demand within the industry.

City College Interim President Dr. Jestoni Babia expressed profound gratitude to all attendees who dedicated their time to support the advancement of education in the city.
